About Us

Our new facility is approximately 74,000 square feet and comprises three inmate housing units or pods, a kitchen, a medical suite, a visiting area, and jail administration. The maximum facility capacity is 130, with room for expansion if necessary in the future.

The Herkimer County Correctional Facility serves the public by providing a safe, secure, efficient, and humane environment for those persons ordered to be held or sentenced by the court system. Our new facility offers incarcerated individuals an opportunity to better themselves through programs in a safe environment that were not available in our previous facility. The use of modern correction innovation and technology makes the facility more efficient and safe for the public, employees, and incarcerated individuals.

Visitation

Visits by family and friends are encouraged and can be a positive influence during an individual’s time in jail and after release.

Every incarcerated individual is permitted two 60-minute visits per week. Visitation is held on Wednesday and Sunday and is assigned to each incarcerated individual. Contact the facility for designated visitation times.

Visitation is restricted to (2) individuals per visit and a child two years or younger. All visitors ages 17 and under must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian while in the visitation room.

Visitors 16 years or older need to provide valid identification (see acceptable list), and visitors 15 years or younger must have a birth certificate or passport as a form of identification.

Visitation Rules

Visitors will be required to submit to an electronic search.

Visitors must empty their pockets and remove from their person all items except clothing, wedding bands, prescription eyewear, and medical alert bracelets. You could be arrested and charged with “Promoting Prison Contraband” if you attempt to enter the visitation area in possession of prohibited items.

Items not allowed inside the visitation area include but are not limited to:

• Weapons of any kind
• Any money
• Illegal, prescription, or non-prescription drugs
• Electronic devices of any kind, including cell phones
• Hair grooming and restraining devices, such as combs, barrettes, pins, clips, and other solid devices, are prohibited. Rubber or elastic bands are acceptable.
• Hats and non-religious head coverings
• Purses, bags, fannypacks, totes, etc.
• Beverage containers of any kind
• Baby items (except receiving blankets, pacifiers, and clear bottles for newborns)
• Wallets, money clips, knives, or nail clippers.
• Pens, paper, crayons, books, or toys.

Prohibited clothing is to include but is not limited to the following:

• See-thru tops or bottoms
• Low-cut tops
• Shirts that expose any midriff section
• Bra-type tops
• Short skirts or short shorts. Shorts and skirts must come down to mid-thigh.
• Any provocative or revealing clothing
• Clothing with offensive or alarming graphics, printing, or design
• Bulky clothing such as hooded sweatshirts, heavy sweaters, coats, and jackets

Visitors wearing inappropriate clothing may be asked to change into something more appropriate for the setting or may be denied the visit if no other clothing is available. This includes any apparel with holes or rips.

Shorts and pants shall be worn at the waist and not show the visitor’s undergarments.

Visitors appearing to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be denied entry to visitation.

No substitutions of visitors.

No Foul Language.

Shorts and skirts must come down to mid-thigh.

Visitors who violate rules may be prosecuted and lose visiting privileges. Rules are established to keep everyone safe and ensure a positive experience.

Acceptable Identification

Visitors 16 or older are required to present photo identification. Acceptable identification includes:

• Drivers license with picture and date of birth
• Sheriff’s Id with picture and date of birth
• Social services benefit card with picture and date of birth
• New York State personal identification card with picture and date of birth
• School identification card with picture and date of birth
• Passport or passport card

Visitors 15 years old and younger must have one of the following:

• Birth certificate
• Passport or passport card
• School identification card with photo and date of birth
• School identification card with picture and date of birth

Professional Visits

Professional visitors (clergy, attorneys, service providers, etc.) needing access to incarcerated individuals are asked to see incarcerated individuals at times not unduly disruptive to facility routine, including lock down times. Please contact the facility ahead of time if you have any questions.

Posting Bail

Bail can be posted twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven days a week. Bail is accepted in cash, credit card, or bail bond. The type of bail and bond can be specified by the court detaining the individual in our facility. Please be patient when posting bail or bond since this process may take some time.

Inmate Commissary Funds

Funds can be deposited into an inmate’s commissary account online by going to smartdeposit.com, using our lobby kiosk, or depositing money at the facility on Wednesdays, 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm and Sundays, 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. A United States Postal Service money order only can also be sent to an inmate by mail for deposit into their account.

Inmate Telephone System

Herkimer County Correctional Facility uses GTL as our inmate telephone service provider. The system allows inmates to contact their families, friends, and others while in the facility. Contact GTL Customer Service at (877) 650-4249 for more information or to establish an account.

Segregated Confinement

Segregated confinement of incarcerated individuals is not used as a disciplinary sanction at the Herkimer County Correctional Facility.
